Identity and Power in Taiwan’s Traditional Chinese

Abstract

For decades, Taiwan has used Traditional Chinese as a unique marker of the Taiwanese identity and heritage separate from Beijing. What happens when AI language learning technology teaches traditional Chinese with a Beijing accent, grammar, and syntax? This paper explores how one such app, HelloChinese, eradicates Taiwanese culture even as it democratizes access to learning its language.
